Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK) has showcased its ₹538 crore Balagarh Port Gateway Project at a roadshow, highlighting the proposed development as an important addition to West Bengal’s maritime and logistics infrastructure.
The project is aimed at expanding cargo-handling capacity and improving connectivity for industries in the region. The proposed port facility is expected to strengthen the logistics network around the Kolkata-Haldia port system and support the movement of cargo along the Hooghly river corridor.
SMPK is promoting the project to potential investors and industry stakeholders as part of efforts to attract private participation and accelerate port-led infrastructure development.
The Balagarh project is expected to create additional opportunities for cargo movement and improve access to maritime trade for industries located in West Bengal and neighbouring regions. Better port connectivity could also help reduce logistics costs and improve supply-chain efficiency.
The roadshow provided an opportunity for SMPK to present the project’s investment potential, infrastructure plans and expected benefits to prospective stakeholders.
The initiative comes as India continues to focus on expanding port capacity, improving multimodal connectivity and developing logistics infrastructure to support growing domestic and international trade.
Once developed, the Balagarh Port Gateway Project could strengthen SMPK’s role in regional cargo movement while supporting West Bengal’s broader efforts to expand its maritime economy and logistics capabilities.
