With Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd (VISL) set to be commissioned in Sept/Oct, the authorities have started recruiting staff and training eligible candidates for different jobs.
Though the total number of employees required for the port is yet to be declared, state-run VISL and the special purpose vehicle Adani Ports have started recruiting people.
The port will require experienced engineers, those qualified in marine and port operations and management, freshers, those with diploma, graduates in math and science in the coming days.
Adani Ports has notified recruitment of people to operate fuel stations, vessel planners, welders, marine fitters, crane operators, electrical technicians, mechanical technicians, yard planners, and tower controllers. These personnel are required for jobs connected with handling of ships and containers. State govt-run ASAP skilling centre too has advertised training for graduate interns and executives for specific vacancies.
“Those with experience of working in ports, fresh graduates and those who have technical qualifications will qualify to apply. Preference will be given to female candidates from the nearby five wards in the area,” sources said.
Besides general recruitment, the skilling centre set up in Vizhinjam is training people to equip them to handle different specific jobs at the port. “The training is being done as per the port’s requirement. Simultaneously, 25 people are being trained to handle containers and to operate internal vehicles used to transfer containers within the port.
These vehicles need special training to operate within the port safely. People who undergo the training are recruited in the port. Around 17 people from the first batch were given jobs,” said an official.
Those who complete training at the skilling centre are eligible for jobs in any port.
However, the training will be given to people based on the port’s requirements initially, before starting regular courses. As more ships start arriving, manpower requirements will be assessed and more people will be trained and recruited. The first mother ship unloaded around 2,000 containers. Feeder ships picked up these containers.
Meanwhile, VISL and Adani Ports have warned prospective candidates against false job offers. VISL said that it has not outsourced recruitment to any agency, and vacancies are hosted on its website.
