The ambitious Vizhinjam Port Tunnel rail corridor will reshape regional logistics by linking port to national lines with a 10.7 km route and a 9.43 km Tunnel.

The Tender process is expected to begin in August, with contract award by November, initiating construction under an EPC framework. This ₹1,482.92 crore project aims for completion by December 2028.

Officials plan to route most Tunnel length beneath existing roads, reducing displacement and environmental impact. They also prepare a video walkthrough to explain engineering safeguards and ease community concerns.

Experts highlight that enhancing rail access transforms ports into national cargo gateways, significantly boosting trade from southern states. The Tunnel connection will streamline shipping, attract investment, and elevate Kerala’s status as a maritime hub. Ongoing land acquisition spans four villages, and complementary road upgrades are progressing to support the full corridor.

By integrating advanced engineering, clear stakeholder communication, and sustainability-focused planning, this Tunnel project promises to redefine connectivity in southern India and reinforce Vizhinjam’s role within international supply chains.
