India and Singapore are set to sign five agreements to boost cooperation in key sectors, including shipping, civil aviation, and space, during Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s three-day visit to New Delhi beginning Tuesday.
This is Wong’s first trip to India as prime minister and coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations. The visit is aimed at deepening economic engagement and advancing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Wong will virtually inaugurate a container terminal in Maharashtra on Thursday, a project backed by over $1 billion in investments from the Port of Singapore Authority (PSA International).
Singapore has emerged as a major investor in India, with cumulative investments since 2014 touching $175 billion, including $60 billion in the post-Covid period, official data showed.
“Singapore is an important partner for India, including in our ‘Act East’ Policy,” the Ministry of External Affairs said while announcing the visit, adding that the leaders will review bilateral ties and explore new areas of collaboration.
Talks are expected to cover renewable energy and digital connectivity, including a proposed underwater cable project linking India and Singapore for both solar power export and data connectivity. The two sides are also exploring opportunities for the export of green ammonia and green hydrogen.
Wong will be accompanied by his spouse and a high-level delegation of cabinet ministers and senior officials. He is scheduled to meet President Droupadi Murmu, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and other Union ministers.
The visit follows the India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable held in New Delhi on August 13, where both sides discussed future cooperation in trade, finance, technology, and connectivity.
