The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has taken a major step towards sustainable transportation with the introduction of hybrid electric catamarans on national waterways.

One of the six eco-friendly vessels being built at Hooghly Cochin Shipyard Limited (HCSL) is currently en route to Patna, Bihar, where it will be deployed on National Waterway-1 (NW-1).

These modern catamarans are designed to reduce carbon emissions, enhance fuel efficiency, and provide a cleaner mode of passenger transport along India’s inland waterways. The move is part of IWAI’s broader vision to promote greener and more efficient waterborne transport systems across the country.
