Mormugao Port has earned the distinction of becoming the first accredited Green Port in India under the Green Port Certification Programme. The announcement was made by Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) Chairman, Shri N. Vinodkumar, during a roadshow in the lead-up to India Maritime Week 2025, scheduled from October 27–31 in Mumbai with participation from over 100 countries.
The certification was conferred by the Centre of Excellence on ESG and Circularity, Mumbai. Notably, Mormugao is also among the three Indian ports selected by the World Bank under its project for greening of ports.
“This recognition is a milestone for MPA. Last year, we became the first port in the country to incentivise commercial vessels based on Environment Ship Index (ESI) scores. This certification further reinforces our commitment to sustainable and responsible port operations,” Vinodkumar said.
To curb emissions and reduce its carbon footprint, MPA has operationalised a 3MW solar power plant, with plans to expand capacity to 5MW in partnership with Goa Energy Development Agency (GEDA).
Looking ahead, the Port Authority is also working to transform Mormugao into a smart port. “We have a roadmap to introduce 5G in major ports to enable advanced and faster communication technologies. A strong 5G backbone will be crucial to modernising port operations,” Vinodkumar added.
On the technology front, he highlighted that India is moving towards indigenous vessel traffic management systems for safe navigation. “Seven of the 12 major ports are already working with Indian-developed software, reducing dependence on foreign systems,” he said.
The achievement positions Mormugao Port as a frontrunner in India’s sustainable maritime transformation, aligning with global efforts to decarbonise shipping and port operations.
