In a key administrative reshuffle, S. Viswanathan, Deputy Chairperson of the Chennai Port Authority (ChPA), has been handed additional charge as Chairperson with effect from Monday.

The move comes after Sunil Paliwal relinquished his charge as Chairperson, ChPA, on November 30, following his appointment as Chairman of Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways.

The port authority’s official release confirmed the change, marking S. Viswanathan’s elevation to guide ChPA’s operations pending a permanent appointment.

    S. Viswanathan, an IAS officer, had earlier taken over as Deputy Chairperson of ChPA in April 2023.

The administrative shuffle comes at a critical time for India’s maritime and inland waterways agenda — with Paliwal’s elevation to IWAI expected to accelerate efforts to expand and modernise the country’s inland water transport network.
