Work on the proposed coastal berth at Hangarkatta in Karnataka’s Udupi district is awaiting final approval from the Union Government, delaying the start of construction on the infrastructure project.

The project, aimed at boosting coastal shipping and improving local maritime connectivity, has already secured clearances and approvals at the state level. However, the final go-ahead from the Centre is required before work can begin.

Once approved, the Hangarkatta coastal berth is expected to support the movement of cargo by sea, reduce pressure on road transport and provide a fillip to regional trade and economic activity. The facility is also seen as a step towards strengthening India’s coastal shipping network under the Centre’s port-led development and Sagarmala initiatives.

Local officials said preparatory work has been completed and the project can be taken up soon after the Union Government grants its clearance. Stakeholders in the region are hopeful that the approval process will be concluded at the earliest to avoid further delays.
