Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), India’s premier container port, has scripted a new chapter in the country’s maritime history by achieving its highest-ever annual container throughput in calendar year (CY) 2025. The port handled a total of 79,44,257 TEUs, registering a robust year-on-year growth of 12.64%, underlining its operational excellence, growing trade volumes, and strategic infrastructure development.
Adding to this landmark performance, December 2025 emerged as the best-ever monthly performance for JNPA. The port handled 7,11,412 TEUs during the month, surpassing the earlier record of 6,95,968 TEUs achieved in August 2025. This achievement reflects sustained cargo momentum and improved efficiency across terminals even during peak operating periods.
Drivers of Growth
The record performance in CY 2025 was supported by several key factors:
Enhanced terminal productivity across JNPA-operated and PPP terminals
Improved port-led connectivity, including better rail and road evacuation
Adoption of digital and automation-driven processes, reducing vessel turnaround time
Rising EXIM trade volumes and increased containerised cargo movement
Strong coordination among stakeholders, including terminal operators, shipping lines, logistics players and port users
JNPA’s continued focus on capacity augmentation, operational efficiency and customer-centric initiatives has strengthened its position as India’s leading container gateway and a preferred port of call on the west coast.
Strategic Importance
As the country’s largest container port, JNPA plays a critical role in facilitating India’s foreign trade and supporting the government’s vision of Maritime India, Sagarmala, and PM Gati Shakti. The port’s performance in 2025 reinforces India’s growing integration with global supply chains and its emergence as a competitive maritime and logistics hub.
Looking Ahead to 2026
With multiple infrastructure and capacity enhancement projects in the pipeline, including terminal expansions, hinterland connectivity improvements and green port initiatives, JNPA is well positioned to scale new heights in 2026. The port authority has reaffirmed its commitment to setting new milestones, improving service standards and driving sustainable maritime growth in line with national priorities.
JNPA’s record-breaking performance in CY 2025 not only highlights its operational strength but also signals strong growth prospects for India’s ports and logistics sector in the years ahead.
