The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has facilitated the movement of over-dimensional cargo (ODC) through inland waterways to support the development of Assam’s emerging semiconductor ecosystem.
The cargo, comprising critical equipment required for semiconductor manufacturing, was transported using National Waterways as part of efforts to provide a cost-effective and sustainable logistics solution. Officials said the use of inland waterways helped overcome challenges associated with road transport, including congestion and infrastructure constraints.
IWAI said the successful movement highlights the growing role of inland water transport in handling specialised and heavy cargo for high-value industrial projects. The initiative is aligned with the government’s push to promote multimodal logistics and reduce overall transportation costs.
Industry stakeholders noted that reliable logistics support is crucial for semiconductor projects, which involve sensitive and oversized equipment. The use of waterways is expected to enhance efficiency while lowering environmental impact.
IWAI said it will continue to work with state governments and industry to expand the use of inland waterways for industrial cargo movement across the region.
