The government of Tamil Nadu has granted special project status to the proposed greenfield airport at Parandur, bringing it under the provisions of the state’s Special Projects Facilitation framework to accelerate its development.

The notification allows the airport project to benefit from streamlined administrative procedures, faster approvals and coordinated support from multiple government departments. Officials said the move is intended to ensure the timely implementation of the large-scale infrastructure project, which is planned as the second airport for Chennai.

The Parandur greenfield airport is being developed to complement the existing Chennai International Airport, which has been experiencing capacity constraints due to increasing passenger traffic and cargo demand. Once completed, the new airport is expected to significantly enhance aviation capacity in the region.

According to state authorities, the project will include modern passenger terminals, cargo handling facilities, runway infrastructure and multimodal connectivity to integrate with road and rail networks. The airport is also expected to support regional economic development and attract investment in logistics, aviation services and related industries.

The designation under the special projects framework enables the government to fast-track land acquisition, environmental clearances and infrastructure planning required for the project’s implementation.

Industry observers say the Parandur airport project could play a crucial role in strengthening southern India’s aviation network, supporting both passenger growth and air cargo expansion. The development is also expected to reduce congestion at Chennai’s existing airport while improving connectivity for businesses and travellers in the region.

Authorities indicated that further planning and development work will continue as the project moves into the next phase of implementation under the state’s special project mechanism.
