India’s rail network has reached 99.6% electrification, while freight loading has climbed to a record 1,670 million tonnes (MT), marking a major milestone in the country’s transport infrastructure development, according to the Centre.

Officials said the near-complete electrification of broad-gauge routes is expected to significantly reduce dependence on fossil fuels, lower operating costs, and cut carbon emissions across the rail network. The push is part of a broader strategy to modernise Indian Railways and improve energy efficiency.

The record freight performance reflects strong demand from key sectors such as coal, steel, cement, and agricultural commodities. Increased capacity, improved logistics planning, and infrastructure upgrades have contributed to higher freight throughput during the year.

The government has been focusing on expanding dedicated freight corridors, enhancing track capacity, and deploying advanced signalling systems to improve overall efficiency and turnaround times. These efforts have helped Indian Railways handle growing cargo volumes while maintaining operational reliability.

With electrification nearing completion and freight volumes at an all-time high, policymakers see the railways as a critical pillar in supporting economic growth, reducing logistics costs, and advancing India’s sustainability goals.
