In a major boost to Jammu & Kashmir’s horticulture exports, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, has facilitated the first export shipment of premium Areko cherries and Scentrose plums from Shopian and Pulwama to Singapore.
The milestone marks a further expansion of Kashmir’s premium temperate fruit exports, following the successful shipment of fresh cherries and plums to Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the UAE.
APEDA, in collaboration with Osum Food Solutions LLP and Fruit Master Agro Fresh Private Limited, Pulwama, organised the flag-off ceremony for the inaugural consignment to Singapore on July 16.
Jammu & Kashmir’s favourable agro-climatic conditions enable the production of high-quality temperate fruits known for their superior taste, texture and shelf life. The export consignment was scientifically harvested, graded, packed and transported through an efficient cold chain, ensuring compliance with international food safety and phytosanitary standards and maintaining freshness during transit.
According to APEDA, the initiative is expected to provide growers with more than 50 per cent higher returns compared to conventional domestic marketing channels. It is also expected to encourage export-oriented production, greater adoption of scientific cultivation practices, improved post-harvest management and reduced post-harvest losses.
The authority said the initiative will help enhance value realisation for farmers while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for fruit-growing communities across Jammu & Kashmir.
The export forms part of APEDA’s broader strategy to strengthen India’s horticultural exports through market diversification, improved logistics and export facilitation. By connecting growers with premium international markets, APEDA aims to boost farmers’ incomes and establish Jammu & Kashmir as a reliable supplier of premium fresh temperate fruits to global markets.
