PSA Antwerp has taken delivery of a new ship-to-shore (STS) crane at its Noordzee Terminal, bringing the terminal’s total crane fleet to 14 units and strengthening its ability to handle the latest generation of ultra-large container vessels. The new crane arrived at the terminal on August 10, 2026.
The crane has a lifting height of 52 metres and an outreach extending across up to 26 container rows, allowing it to serve some of the world’s largest containerships. The equipment forms part of PSA Antwerp’s ongoing modernisation efforts at the Noordzee Terminal.
Designed for mega containerships
The new STS crane is designed to improve quayside handling capability as vessel sizes continue to increase. Its 52-metre lifting height and wide outreach enable operators to work across the broad decks of ultra-large container vessels.
PSA Antwerp said the additional equipment will support higher handling capacity and greater operational reliability, helping the terminal meet the requirements of shipping customers operating larger vessels.
Commissioning to take several months
Although the crane has arrived at the terminal, it will not immediately enter commercial service. The equipment must first be unloaded from the vessel that transported it to Antwerp, followed by installation, testing and inspection.
PSA Antwerp expects the commissioning process to take several months before the crane becomes fully operational.
Noordzee Terminal strengthens capacity
The Noordzee Terminal has a 1,265-metre quay, a maximum depth of 17 metres and a designed capacity of around 3 million TEUs. With the latest addition, its crane fleet now stands at 14 units.
The terminal is specifically equipped to handle large container vessels and forms an important part of PSA Antwerp’s container-handling network at the Port of Antwerp.
The latest investment is expected to improve berth productivity and provide additional equipment flexibility as demand for large-vessel handling continues to grow.
Part of wider terminal modernisation
The new crane comes as PSA Antwerp continues to invest in terminal infrastructure and equipment across its Antwerp operations. Earlier this year, the company received five new mega STS cranes for the Europa Terminal under its Project Emerald modernisation programme. Those cranes are designed to handle vessels up to 26 containers wide and are intended to increase capacity and operational efficiency.
With the addition of another STS crane at Noordzee Terminal, PSA Antwerp is further strengthening its quayside capabilities and preparing the facility to handle growing volumes and increasingly large containerships efficiently.
