India and Chile are working towards concluding negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) that delivers a balanced, commercially meaningful and mutually beneficial framework for businesses in both countries.

Commerce Secretary Shri Rajesh Agrawal held discussions with Ms. Paula Estévez Weinstein, Vice-Minister of International Economic Relations of Chile, during which both sides reviewed the progress and priorities surrounding the proposed trade agreement.

During the meeting, Shri Agrawal emphasised the importance of building on the strong and expanding India–Chile relationship and ensuring that the CEPA translates the two countries’ shared ambitions into tangible opportunities for trade and investment.

India has highlighted the need for the agreement to generate practical benefits for businesses, including improved market access, greater investment opportunities and stronger commercial linkages between the two economies. The focus is expected to remain on securing outcomes that are equitable while creating meaningful opportunities for companies on both sides.

Bilateral trade between India and Chile has been growing steadily, providing a stronger foundation for deeper economic engagement. The proposed CEPA is expected to further strengthen this relationship by facilitating trade and investment flows and expanding cooperation across sectors.

India remains committed to completing the negotiations within 2026, to deliver an agreement that is balanced, commercially viable and beneficial to businesses in both countries.

The negotiations come as India continues to pursue an active trade-agreement agenda aimed at expanding market access for Indian exporters, strengthening supply-chain linkages and creating new opportunities for investment and economic cooperation with key international partners.

A successful India–Chile CEPA could therefore provide a stronger institutional framework for the next phase of bilateral economic relations, while giving businesses greater predictability and access to opportunities in each other’s markets.
