Goa’s Captain of Ports is considering a fresh initiative to dredge the Cumberjua Canal, with the move aimed at improving navigability and supporting smoother movement of vessels through the important inland waterway.
The canal is a key link in Goa’s inland navigation network, connecting the Mandovi and Zuari river systems and supporting the movement of cargo and other vessels. Sedimentation over time can reduce navigable depth and create operational challenges for vessel movement.
The proposed dredging effort is expected to focus on restoring adequate depth along critical stretches of the canal. Improved navigability could facilitate more reliable vessel operations and strengthen the use of Goa’s inland waterways.
The Captain of Ports is examining the possibility of taking forward the dredging programme as part of efforts to improve waterway infrastructure. Further details on the scope, funding and implementation timeline are expected to be finalised as the proposal progresses.
Renewed dredging of the Cumberjua Canal could also support Goa’s broader efforts to promote inland water transport and improve connectivity between its river and port infrastructure.
