Northern Railway is planning to establish warehouses at Anantnag and Pampore in Jammu and Kashmir to strengthen agricultural freight movement and improve logistics support for the region’s farming sector. The proposed facilities aim to make it easier for farmers and traders to transport perishable produce and other agricultural commodities to markets outside the Kashmir Valley.
The warehouses are expected to improve cargo handling, storage and coordination with railway freight services. Better access to organised logistics infrastructure could help reduce delays, improve the movement of farm produce and support more efficient distribution to domestic markets.
Kashmir produces significant quantities of apples, saffron and other horticultural products, making reliable transportation a key requirement for the agricultural economy. Seasonal harvests often generate large volumes of cargo within short periods, increasing demand for dependable transport and storage facilities.
The proposed warehouses at Anantnag and Pampore could help connect agricultural production centres with railway freight networks, offering farmers and traders an additional option for moving goods beyond the region. Improved rail-linked logistics may also support more predictable delivery schedules and reduce dependence on road transport alone.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen freight infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir and improve connectivity between regional producers and major consumption centres. Rail-based cargo movement can offer advantages for transporting large volumes over long distances, particularly when supported by suitable warehousing and handling facilities.
Once developed, the facilities could strengthen the Kashmir Valley’s agricultural supply chain by improving coordination between storage, cargo aggregation and onward transportation. Their effectiveness will depend on implementation timelines, handling capacity and integration with available freight services.
The project highlights the growing importance of multimodal logistics in supporting agricultural trade and improving market access for producers in geographically challenging regions.
