India is confident of achieving a target of $100 billion in textile and apparel exports, including overseas shipments of garments worth $40 billion, within a period of 5–6 years. This will be two and a half times the current exports. A senior official from the Ministry of Textiles expressed confidence during an interaction at Bharat Tex.
Rohit Kansal, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Textiles, said that Bharat Tex, the annual global trade exhibition, had attracted exhibitors and visitors from more than 125 countries. He stated that India has been a leader in the textile sector for centuries. More than 126 countries have participated in India’s textile sector, with 5,000 exhibitors and 6,000 buyers, showcasing the vibrancy of India’s textile industry.
He said, “We are confident that we will be able to achieve the target we set—$100 billion in T&A exports, including $40 billion in apparel exports, by 2030.” It is important to note that India’s current T&A exports were well below $40 billion in the past year.
During the previous fiscal year 2023–24 (April–March), India’s textile and apparel exports decreased by 3.24 per cent to $34.430 billion. The shipment of apparel exports fell by 10.25 per cent to $14.532 billion during this period. However, exports in the first nine months of the current fiscal year 2024–25 showed notable improvement, with exports rising by 7.63 per cent to reach $26.593 billion. Apparel exports rose by 11.58 per cent, reaching $11.316 billion in the corresponding period last fiscal year.
On response of global exhibitors and visitors in the fair, the Apparel Export Promotion Council commented in a social media post on X, “Bharat Tex 2025 has attracted numerous international buyers and visitors. Visitors and exhibitors are very enthusiastic about the event.”
