The India-European Union free trade agreement will allow up to 1 lakh cars to be imported from the EU at lower tariffs during the first year, providing European automakers with improved access to the Indian market.

The tariff concession is expected to support greater trade in automobiles between India and the EU and could encourage European manufacturers to expand their presence in the Indian market.

Under the agreement, eligible vehicle imports will receive preferential tariff treatment within the agreed quota. The measure is expected to gradually increase competition in India’s passenger vehicle segment while giving consumers access to a wider range of European models.

For European automakers, the lower tariffs could improve the commercial viability of exporting vehicles to India, particularly in premium and high-value segments. The quota-based arrangement also provides a controlled framework for expanding imports without opening the market fully to unrestricted tariff reductions.

The automotive provision forms part of the broader India-EU trade agreement aimed at increasing bilateral trade and investment. The pact is expected to improve market access across several sectors while creating new opportunities for businesses on both sides.

The impact on India’s automobile industry will depend on how quickly European manufacturers utilise the quota and how the increased availability of imported vehicles affects domestic competition.

The first-year quota marks a significant step in opening India’s automotive market to greater European participation under the trade pact.
