The Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) has signed 25 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) at the ongoing India Maritime Week in Mumbai, outlining a tentative investment pipeline of ₹6,160 crore, including a major ₹3,500 crore ($400 million) LNG terminal proposal at Vasco port.
In a parallel announcement, the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) earmarked ₹200 crore for the development of Goa’s waterways, a move that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said will accelerate the modernisation of ferry terminals, jetties, and river navigation infrastructure across the state.
“The impact of this investment will soon be visible across Goa’s waterways, enhancing mobility, tourism, and economic activity,” Sawant said while speaking at the inaugural session of India Maritime Week. “We have set up the Shipbuilding Vision 2037 to position Goa as a green, smart, and export-driven maritime hub. A comprehensive shipbuilding policy will follow shortly.”
Sawant highlighted that Goa’s maritime masterplan will focus on eco-friendly coastal shipping, cruise tourism, fisheries infrastructure, logistics, renewable energy, and skilling youth for emerging maritime jobs.
Among the major agreements signed, MPA and Atlantic & Pacific LNG have entered into a strategic alliance for the development, construction, and operation of LNG and LPG terminals at Vasco, expected to be commissioned by 2027.
“The government’s goal is to drive port-led industrial growth while balancing development with ocean health,” Sawant added. “We are committed to advancing the circular economy, promoting clean energy, and ensuring the responsible use of marine resources in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.”
Port authorities are also exploring the feasibility of interstate ferry services, including a proposed Mumbai–Goa Ro-Ro ferry, aimed at improving connectivity and reducing road congestion.
Meanwhile, Goa Ports Minister Digambar Kamat confirmed that the process to establish the Goa Maritime Board is already underway to oversee and streamline maritime activities in the state.
