The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has commenced loading operations for cargo vessel MV Homi Bhabha at its state-of-the-art Multi-Modal Terminal (MMT) in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Once fully loaded, the vessel will set sail for the Sahibganj MMT in Jharkhand, marking another milestone in India’s push to strengthen cargo movement through its inland waterways network.

The MV Homi Bhabha’s voyage underscores the strategic importance of National Waterway-1 (NW-1) — the 1,620-kilometre stretch of the Ganga-Bhagirathi-Hooghly river system connecting Haldia in West Bengal to Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh. The Varanasi–Sahibganj route, a key segment of NW-1, offers an environmentally friendly and cost-efficient alternative to traditional road and rail cargo transport.

    Boosting Riverine Cargo Movement
The cargo loaded onto MV Homi Bhabha includes bulk commodities critical to regional trade. Officials from IWAI highlighted that the journey will showcase the efficiency and viability of inland water transport for both domestic and cross-border logistics.

“The movement of MV Homi Bhabha between these two multi-modal terminals is part of our ongoing efforts to integrate waterways into the national freight grid,” said an IWAI spokesperson. “By using the Ganga as a navigational channel, we not only decongest road and rail networks but also reduce carbon emissions, in line with India’s sustainability commitments.”

    Strategic Terminals Enabling Trade
The Varanasi MMT, inaugurated in 2018, serves as a critical hub for cargo consolidation and distribution in eastern Uttar Pradesh. On the other end, Sahibganj MMT, operational since 2019, facilitates direct cargo movement to the northeast and neighbouring countries like Bangladesh via riverine and coastal shipping links.

The voyage of MV Homi Bhabha is also expected to reinforce industry confidence in long-haul river transport, especially for bulk commodities, minerals, agricultural produce, and construction materials.

With IWAI continuing to invest in dredging, river navigation aids, and port infrastructure, stakeholders anticipate a steady increase in cargo volumes along NW-1, positioning India’s inland waterways as a competitive and sustainable logistics option.
