Nagpur is poised for a transformative infrastructure upgrade, with projects worth over Rs 1,600 crore underway to construct a continuous service road around the city’s ring road, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced.
The initiative is part of a broader plan to ease urban congestion while enhancing Nagpur’s role in India’s national logistics network. Speaking at the “Logistics Talent for Tomorrow” seminar organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Gadkari highlighted the city’s strategic location and its potential to emerge as the country’s logistics capital.
“Nagpur is ideally located to emerge as the country’s logistics capital,” he said, noting that most major Indian cities are reachable from Nagpur within 1.5 to 2 hours by air, giving the city a natural advantage as a distribution and warehousing hub.
As part of the development plan, logistics parks are proposed at all four corners of the city, while Transport Nagars—large transport hubs—may be established along the outer fringes. Infrastructure upgrades are also being prioritized along the Sindi dry port–Butibori corridor, which is expected to anchor future industrial and freight movement.
Gadkari further outlined ongoing urban restructuring initiatives: the central jail is set to be relocated, while redevelopment tenders for the Cotton Market and Santra Market will soon be floated. Land acquisition has begun for the four-laning of the Mayo Hospital–Shaheed Chowk stretch, aimed at improving traffic flow.
Additionally, godowns and wholesale markets in congested areas, including the Kirana Market, are set to be shifted to Kalamana, marking a significant step towards modernizing the city’s logistics and trade infrastructure.
With these measures, Nagpur is being positioned as a key node in India’s logistics ecosystem, combining urban modernization with industrial and freight connectivity.
