Indian Railways recorded a 5.4% year-on-year increase in freight loading in August, reflecting continued growth in rail-based cargo movement.
The rise in freight loading highlights the sustained role of the rail network in transporting bulk commodities and supporting domestic supply chains. Rail freight remains a key mode for moving coal, iron ore, cement, foodgrains, fertilisers and other commodities across the country.
The increase also comes as Indian Railways continues to focus on improving freight efficiency, expanding capacity and strengthening connectivity with major industrial and logistics centres.
Higher freight volumes can support railway revenues while helping industries move large quantities of cargo over longer distances. Improved rail infrastructure and faster transit times are expected to further encourage businesses to shift more freight to rail.
The government has been investing in dedicated freight infrastructure and network modernisation to improve cargo movement and reduce logistics costs. These initiatives are aimed at increasing the railways’ share in India’s overall freight transportation.
The August performance indicates continued momentum in rail freight demand and supports India’s broader efforts to build a more efficient and integrated logistics network.
