Shashi Tharoor has praised Vizhinjam Port as a strategic maritime hub amid the ongoing Strait of Hormuz crisis, highlighting the port’s growing importance to India’s trade and logistics security. Referring to its potential with the phrase “100 ships. One destination,” he underscored the facility’s ability to attract global shipping traffic during periods of regional disruption.

The remarks come as tensions around the Strait of Hormuz continue to raise concerns over global shipping routes, energy supplies, and freight costs. Any instability in the narrow waterway can disrupt trade flows between Asia, the Gulf, Europe, and beyond, prompting renewed attention on alternative hubs and efficient transshipment gateways.

Vizhinjam Port, located on India’s southern coast near key international sea lanes, is widely seen as strategically positioned to capture cargo that might otherwise be routed through foreign transshipment ports. Its natural deep draft and proximity to major east-west shipping lanes enhance its competitiveness for large container vessels.

Industry observers say the port could help India reduce reliance on overseas hubs for transshipment while improving supply chain resilience during geopolitical shocks. Increased vessel calls would also support regional employment, warehousing, trucking, and maritime services.

Shashi Tharoor’s endorsement adds to the growing focus on infrastructure that can strengthen India’s maritime self-reliance and global trade positioning. As shipping lines reassess network efficiency amid uncertainty, ports with location advantages are expected to gain greater relevance.

Analysts believe Vizhinjam Port could emerge as one of India’s most strategically valuable ports if it successfully scales operations and captures larger shares of regional transshipment traffic.
