Urgent calls are mounting for stronger action against coal pollution at Mormugao Port, as concerns rise over environmental impact, public health, and cargo handling practices in surrounding communities. Residents, activists, and civic groups have intensified demands for immediate mitigation measures to curb dust emissions linked to coal movement through the port.

Mormugao Port is one of India’s key west coast maritime gateways and has long handled bulk cargo including coal, iron ore, and other commodities. However, repeated complaints have emerged over airborne particulate matter generated during unloading, storage, and transportation activities.

Community representatives say coal dust has affected nearby residential areas, roads, vegetation, and water bodies, raising fears over respiratory illnesses and long-term ecological damage. They are urging authorities to tighten environmental monitoring and enforce stricter compliance standards.

Among the measures being sought are covered conveyor systems, enclosed storage yards, mechanised dust suppression, water spraying, green buffer zones, and better truck movement management. Stakeholders are also calling for transparent air quality data and regular health assessments in affected areas.

Port and industry operators maintain that cargo movement remains important for regional trade and industrial supply chains, but analysts note that balancing economic activity with environmental responsibility is increasingly critical for port sustainability.

The growing pressure for intervention at Mormugao Port reflects a wider national debate over cleaner logistics operations. Experts say modern pollution-control systems and stronger oversight will be essential to ensure that cargo growth does not come at the expense of community well-being.
