Freight train services between India and Bangladesh have officially resumed after a nine-month suspension. The first cargo shipment successfully arrived at Birol railway station in Bangladesh from Radhikapur, India, marking the reopening of a key trade route, according to the railway news portal Railway Supply.
Before entering Bangladesh, Indian freight trains completed customs procedures at Radhikapur railway station. The shipment then travelled via the Birol land border, reinstating vital trade connections between the neighbouring countries. Officials confirmed that the imported goods would be unloaded, after which the train would return to India via the same route.
Trade disruptions and restoration
Passenger and freight train services between India and Bangladesh were suspended in July last year due to political instability in Bangladesh. The resumption of freight services is expected to enhance economic cooperation and facilitate a steady supply of goods between the two nations.
Trade between India and Bangladesh primarily operates through three major railway corridors: Gede-Darshana route, Petrapole-Benapole route and Radhikapur-Birol route (recently reopened).
