Russia has expressed readiness to import more fishery and meat products from India and is keen on jointly developing the trout market through a technical collaboration that could pave the way for future joint ventures, the Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying said on Thursday.
A visiting Russian delegation conveyed this during a meeting between Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying Rajiv Ranjan ‘Lalan’ Singh and Russian Agriculture Minister Oxana Lut, held on the sidelines of the 23rd India–Russia Annual Summit.
According to a ministry statement, both sides reviewed ways to expand bilateral trade in fisheries, animal and dairy products, while also addressing market access issues and accelerating establishment listings for Indian exporters. Opportunities for collaboration in research, education, and emerging aquaculture technologies — including deep-sea fishing vessels and modern processing systems — were also discussed.
India exported fishery products worth $7.45 billion in 2024–25, of which $127 million went to Russia. Singh underscored India’s potential to diversify its export basket with shrimp, prawns, mackerel, sardines, tuna, crab and other species.
The Russian side conveyed strong interest in sourcing Indian fish and meat products and proposed a joint technical initiative for trout development. Minister Oxana Lut noted that India is already Russia’s second-largest shrimp supplier, and called for establishing a comprehensive framework to further strengthen agrifood cooperation.
Lut said Moscow is keen to deepen collaboration built on the countries’ longstanding agricultural partnership.
