Waltair Division has emerged as the top-performing division in Indian Railways in terms of incremental freight earnings, recording a sharp increase of ₹1,220 crore over the previous year.
After unfurling the national flag, Divisional Railway Manager Lalit Bohra said the division continues to rank among the top five freight-earning divisions of Indian Railways. Waltair achieved a record freight loading of 66.7 million tonnes, registering nearly 13% growth over its previous best — the highest growth among the top 10 freight-loading divisions.
Goods earnings rose to ₹8,212 crore, reflecting a growth of about 19%, while gross revenue crossed ₹9,147 crore, marking a 17.5% increase over last year and exceeding the annual target by 12%. In just the first nine months of the financial year, the division loaded over 61 million tonnes of freight.
Passenger services also recorded robust growth. From April 1 last year to date, Waltair Division operated 230 special trains covering more than 500 trips, handled 1,803 passing-through special trains, and augmented over 5,800 coaches to clear extra passenger rush.
Infrastructure upgrades progressed rapidly during the period. The division completed 21 km of track doubling, 36 km of third-line works, and 43 km of automatic signalling. Electronic Interlocking was commissioned at six stations, 162 Thick Web Switches were laid, and traction infrastructure was strengthened through sub-station upgrades at S Kota, Tyda, Gidam, Duvvada and Simhachalam.
Operational efficiency also improved, with average train examinations increasing to 21.36 rakes per day in FY 2025–26. Process innovations enabled the evacuation of an additional two to three iron ore rakes daily, the DRM said.
On the sustainability front, Visakhapatnam railway station earned the Platinum Green Railway Station Certification. Under the Net Zero Mission, the division commissioned over 1,800 kWp of solar capacity, resulting in energy savings exceeding ₹57 lakh, with plans underway to double the capacity.
