In a significant move to strengthen India’s container shipping capabilities and advance maritime self-reliance, The Shipping Corporation of India Ltd (SCI) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Container Corporation of India Ltd (CONCOR), Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), Sagarmala Finance Corporation Ltd, V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority, and Chennai Port Authority for the formation of the proposed Bharat Container Shipping Line (BCSL).
The MoU was signed in the august presence of Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Hon’ble Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways; Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Hon’ble Union Minister for Railways; and Shri Shantanu Thakur, Hon’ble Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
The proposed Bharat Container Shipping Line aims to enhance India’s presence in the global container shipping sector, reduce dependence on foreign shipping lines, and ensure reliable and cost-effective container services for Indian exporters and importers. The initiative is aligned with the Government of India’s broader vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, Sagarmala Programme, and strengthening the country’s logistics and maritime ecosystem.
By bringing together major public sector entities across shipping, ports, rail logistics, and maritime finance, the initiative seeks to create an integrated, end-to-end container shipping solution. It is expected to improve connectivity between Indian ports and global trade routes, support EXIM trade, and enhance supply chain resilience.
The signing of the MoU reaffirms the Government of India’s commitment to building a strong, self-reliant, and globally competitive Indian shipping industry, while boosting India’s role as a key maritime and logistics hub in the region.
