Frankfurt Airport recorded a modest increase in cargo throughput in January 2026, with volumes rising by 1.2% compared to the same month last year, signalling a steady start to the year for Europe’s leading air freight hub.

Total cargo volumes, including airfreight and airmail, showed gradual improvement despite ongoing global trade uncertainties and shifting supply chain patterns. Airport operator Fraport attributed the growth to stable export demand and improved capacity utilisation across key trade lanes.

Industry observers noted that Frankfurt continues to benefit from its strong position as a central European logistics gateway, supported by extensive freighter operations and belly cargo capacity from international passenger carriers. The airport remains a critical hub for pharmaceuticals, automotive components, machinery, and e-commerce shipments.

While the growth rate remains moderate, the January figures suggest resilience in air cargo demand following fluctuations seen in previous quarters. Analysts highlighted that capacity adjustments and improved scheduling efficiency have helped maintain balanced load factors.

Looking ahead, stakeholders expect cargo performance to remain closely tied to global economic conditions, manufacturing activity, and geopolitical developments. However, Frankfurt Airport’s diversified cargo base and established logistics ecosystem are expected to support stable throughput in the coming months.
