Haldia Dock Complex (HDC), a unit of the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata, has facilitated a major modal shift from road to rail, enabling significant fuel savings and supporting India’s sustainability objectives.
Demonstrating that business development extends beyond attracting cargo and shipping lines, HDC’s Business Development Team coordinated a strategic logistics initiative for Haldia Petrochemicals Limited (HPL). The team brought together HPL and rail logistics partners CJ DARCL Logistics Limited and Container Corporation of India (CONCOR) to move the first rake carrying 45 containers from the port-served railway siding to Delhi and Ludhiana.
The shift from road transport to rail is expected to save approximately 25,000–27,000 litres of diesel that would otherwise have been consumed by 45 trailers operating on the Haldia–Delhi–Ludhiana route. In addition to reducing fuel consumption, the initiative is expected to lower carbon emissions, ease highway congestion, and improve overall supply chain efficiency.
The development aligns with the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s call to reduce dependence on fossil fuels amid evolving geopolitical developments in West Asia. It also highlights the growing role of ports as catalysts for sustainable logistics solutions and multimodal connectivity.
According to HDC officials, the successful collaboration underscores how the port can create value for stakeholders while contributing to national sustainability goals and enhancing logistics competitiveness through innovative transportation solutions.
