The Indian government has said that nearly 45% of the country’s exports to the United States will remain exempt from the new 10% tariff imposed by Washington, offering significant relief to a large section of Indian exporters. Officials noted that the exempted products cover several key sectors, helping cushion the impact of the latest US trade measure.

The government also confirmed that discussions are underway with the United States to establish a separate tariff mechanism for textile and apparel exports. As one of India’s largest export industries and a major source of employment, the textile sector is seeking greater clarity on tariff treatment to maintain its competitiveness in the US market.

According to officials, the tariff exemptions are expected to benefit industries with established preferential treatment or products excluded from the new levy, while exporters in sectors facing higher duties are being closely monitored. The government is engaging with industry stakeholders to assess the impact of the tariff changes and identify areas requiring additional support.

India and the United States continue to hold trade discussions aimed at resolving outstanding market access issues and strengthening bilateral commerce. The ongoing dialogue on textiles forms part of broader efforts to ensure stable trade conditions and minimize disruptions for exporters.

Industry bodies have welcomed the exemption covering nearly half of India’s exports to the US, saying it provides greater certainty for businesses. They also expressed hope that negotiations on the textile mechanism will result in a mutually beneficial framework that supports continued growth in India’s exports to its largest trading partner.
