Western Carriers (India) Ltd has approved plans to develop and operate a general cargo terminal at the GCD Yard of the Kolkata Dock System, marking the logistics company’s entry into port terminal operations. The facility will handle containers and other types of cargo.
The project is located within Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata, where the port had earlier invited private operators to develop the GCD Yard as a general cargo terminal. The proposed facility is intended to support container and general cargo movement while increasing the share of cargo transported by rail.
Western Carriers has not yet disclosed the investment amount, handling capacity, development timeline or commercial terms of the project. The move expands the Kolkata-based company’s existing multimodal logistics operations into physical port infrastructure.
The company already provides integrated rail, road, ocean and inland-waterway logistics, along with warehousing, customs clearance and cargo-handling services. The new terminal is expected to further strengthen its multimodal logistics network.
The Kolkata Dock System handled about 620,000 TEUs in FY25, while Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port handled more than 804,000 TEUs during the same period, underlining the significance of the terminal project for the region’s container trade.
