The Kandla–Thoothukudi route is set to receive a new weekly container service, strengthening direct connectivity between India’s western and southern maritime gateways.
The new service is expected to provide exporters and importers with a more regular shipping option for moving containerised cargo between the two regions. It could also improve access to markets and industrial clusters served by Deendayal Port in Kandla and V.O. Chidambaranar Port in Thoothukudi.
A weekly sailing schedule can offer greater predictability for cargo owners by providing consistent vessel capacity and helping businesses plan inventory and delivery schedules more efficiently.
The service is expected to support the movement of a range of containerised commodities, including engineering goods, textiles, agricultural products, chemicals and other manufactured cargo.
For exporters in southern India, the connection could provide an additional gateway to western India and onward trade routes. Similarly, businesses in Gujarat and neighbouring regions could gain improved access to markets in Tamil Nadu and other southern states.
The new service also has the potential to strengthen coastal and domestic maritime logistics by providing an alternative to longer road-based movements between western and southern India.
With regular weekly connectivity, the Kandla–Thoothukudi container link is expected to enhance cargo movement, improve supply-chain options and strengthen maritime connectivity between the country’s western and southern regions.
