Alexandria Port in Egypt and Greek ports are exploring opportunities to establish new maritime routes and strengthen shipping connectivity between the two countries. The initiative aims to facilitate trade, improve cargo movement and expand cooperation between Mediterranean port networks.
The discussions reflect growing interest in enhancing regional maritime links and creating more efficient transport options for importers and exporters operating across the Mediterranean.
Discussions have focused on two proposed services: an Alexandria–Patras Ro-Pax route for passengers and trucks, and an Alexandria–Volos Ro-Ro route for freight. Both services are intended to improve transport links and support trade between Egypt and Greece.
The talks took place following the third session of the Egyptian-Greek Joint Maritime Committee, held on October 5, 2026. The Greek delegation included representatives from the ports of Patras and Volos, along with senior maritime and customs officials.
The two sides also explored opportunities to expand dry-bulk trade and strengthen cruise shipping cooperation, including the potential for ports in both countries to serve as cruise home ports in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Further technical meetings are planned to assess the operational, commercial and logistical requirements of the proposed routes before implementation. If established, the services could enhance maritime connectivity, create additional freight options and strengthen Alexandria’s role as a gateway linking Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
