Indian Railways is planning to develop logistics facilities at Angamaly and Karukutty railway stations in Kerala under the Thiruvananthapuram division, in a move aimed at strengthening rail-based freight transportation and improving regional logistics connectivity.

The proposed facilities are expected to support the movement of goods by rail and provide businesses with additional options for transporting cargo. Improved railway logistics infrastructure can help streamline freight operations, reduce dependence on road transport and offer more efficient connections to wider supply chains.

Angamaly and Karukutty are located in Ernakulam district, an important commercial and industrial region of Kerala. The development of logistics facilities at these stations could benefit local traders, manufacturers, agricultural businesses and other cargo users by improving access to rail freight services.

Rail-based logistics also offers opportunities to improve the movement of bulk commodities and other suitable cargo over longer distances. Greater use of rail freight can help reduce road congestion, improve fuel efficiency and support more sustainable transportation.

The initiative aligns with Indian Railways’ broader efforts to expand freight-handling infrastructure and increase rail’s share of goods transportation. Better connectivity between local production centres and major logistics hubs could also support regional trade and distribution.

Further details on the proposed facilities, cargo-handling capacity, project cost and implementation schedule are awaited.
