Transport Corporation of India (TCI) reported a 3% year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit to ₹116.9 crore in the second quarter of FY27, as margin pressure offset strong revenue growth.

Revenue rose 14.8% to ₹1,397.9 crore in the July–September quarter, compared with ₹1,217.4 crore in the corresponding period last year. However, net profit margin declined to 8.36% from 9.32%, a contraction of 96 basis points.

The divergence between revenue and profit growth highlights the challenges facing the logistics company in converting higher business volumes into earnings amid operating cost pressures.

For the first half of FY27, TCI’s consolidated revenue increased 12.5% to ₹2,636.5 crore from ₹2,344.2 crore a year earlier. Net profit, however, grew just 1.3% to ₹223.5 crore from ₹220.7 crore. The six-month net profit margin narrowed to 8.48% from 9.41%.

    Seaways Business Under Watch

TCI’s Seaways business remains an important contributor to group earnings, although rising bunker fuel costs have emerged as a challenge. The segment reportedly recorded revenue growth of around 29% during the September quarter.

The extent to which this growth translates into operating profit will be a key indicator of the segment’s performance, particularly amid fuel cost pressures.

On a sequential basis, TCI’s revenue increased 11.4% and net profit rose 9.7% compared with the June quarter, indicating an improvement over the preceding quarter. Nevertheless, earnings growth continued to lag revenue expansion on a year-on-year basis.

    Expansion Plans and Fundraising

The moderation in earnings growth comes as TCI continues to invest in capacity expansion across its logistics and shipping businesses, including plans to add vessels and strengthen its distribution network.

The company has also approved a share buyback of up to ₹150 crore and proposed raising up to ₹300 crore through non-convertible debentures (NCDs).

The combination of expansion spending, shareholder payouts and proposed borrowing places greater emphasis on cash generation, capital allocation and returns on investment.

While additional fleet capacity and network expansion could support future growth, the impact on profitability will depend on utilisation levels, operating cost management and the company’s ability to improve efficiencies.

Sustained margin pressure could weigh on returns from new investments if profits continue to grow more slowly than revenue.

TCI’s September-quarter performance therefore underscores a key challenge for the logistics sector: translating rising demand and expanding business volumes into stronger earnings while managing operating costs and funding future growth.
