APM Terminals (APMT) has announced it will invest $550 million to expand Peru’s Callao port, starting in January 2026.
Fernando Fauche, APM Terminals’ Peru CCO, confirmed on 19 November that the two-year project will raise the terminal’s capacity to 24,000 containers, enhancing throughput and efficiency.
The announcement coincides with the launch of direct shipping services from China and South Korea to Callao, which cut transit times to around 23 days.
According to Reuters, the new routes aim to strengthen trade links with Asia and position Callao as a Pacific hub for containerised imports.
Initial shipments have included retail goods from Chinese e-commerce platforms such as Temu, with the next six weeks of sailings already fully booked.
APMT and local port authorities describe the nearby Chancay megaport as complementary, though analysts note the two facilities may increasingly compete for Asian cargo as investment in port infrastructure along Peru’s Pacific coast accelerates.
The expansion underscores Callao’s role in enhancing the efficiency and connectivity of Latin America’s container-handling network, reinforcing its strategic position within global supply chains.
In October, SAAM Towage, the largest tug operator in the Americas, added the vessel Charrán to its fleet in Peru.
