India is set to test the movement of loaded shipping containers using hyperloop technology, with the state-owned Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) placing a freight pilot project order with TuTr Hyperloop, an IIT Madras-incubated startup.

The project, valued at around ₹200 million–₹230 million ($2.2 million–$2.5 million), will initially test the movement of a fully loaded container through a hyperloop system under real-world freight conditions.

The pilot could eventually pave the way for a hyperloop freight link between a Mumbai port and a CWC logistics facility, subject to the outcome of the trials.

CWC Managing Director Santosh Sinha described the initiative as an R&D project aimed at assessing the feasibility of applying hyperloop technology to freight transportation. Implementation of the pilot is targeted within approximately one year.

Hyperloop systems use low-pressure tubes and magnetically propelled pods to move cargo or passengers at high speeds while reducing friction. The Mumbai freight trial will provide a practical test of the technology’s potential for containerised cargo movement and logistics applications in India.
