Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG) has signed a partnership with Rank Container Terminals (Pvt) Ltd (RCT) to establish a purpose-built Container Cargo Inspection Yard within the port premises, marking a major step in strengthening Hambantota’s position as a logistics gateway for southern Sri Lanka.
The Rs. 1 billion facility will serve as a centralised inspection point for all import and export containers handled at Hambantota International Port (HIP). The project aims to boost operational efficiency, enhance regulatory compliance, and facilitate smoother trade processes. RCT will integrate advanced technology and modern infrastructure in collaboration with Sri Lanka Customs and other government agencies responsible for container inspections.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by senior Customs officials, including Director General of Customs Seevali Arukgoda.
“This facility is mainly targeted at servicing the southern hinterland of Sri Lanka. With the Colombo Port facing an excess of supply, HIP can help reduce the pressure by providing an efficient alternative for container handling and inspection,” said Ravi Wijeratne, Chairman of RCT.
HIPG CEO Wilson Qu noted that the expansion aligns with the port’s original master plan. “Each new development strengthens the port’s ability to meet the growing logistical demands of the region and positions HIP as a key enabler of trade and industrial growth in southern Sri Lanka.”
Founded in 1994, RCT operates Sri Lanka’s leading Inland Clearance Depot in Colombo and is recognised as the pioneer of the country’s import inspection model. It is also the largest terminal operator to host key government agencies, including Customs, under one roof.
Bringing this expertise to Hambantota, RCT plans to replicate its one-stop-shop model, offering a full suite of container handling and inspection services aimed at reducing logistical bottlenecks and improving cargo movement.
Hambantota International Port continues to evolve as a multi-purpose maritime and logistics hub, integrating industrial, automotive, energy, and container operations within a cohesive ecosystem that supports the southern region’s economic ambitions.
