As the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) moves closer to full commissioning, a significant milestone was achieved with the joint inspection of the Vaitarna–Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) section by delegates from the Government of Japan and officials of the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL).

The inspection underscored the long-standing partnership between India and Japan in developing world-class freight infrastructure. More than a routine technical review, the visit symbolised years of collaboration, shared vision and sustained bilateral cooperation in strengthening India’s logistics backbone.

With WDFC connectivity to JNPT nearing completion, seamless and faster cargo movement from India’s largest container port to the northern hinterland is set to become a reality. The enhanced rail connectivity is expected to significantly reduce transit time, improve supply chain efficiency and boost the competitiveness of Indian exports.

Following the inspection, delegates from the Government of Japan and DFCCIL visited JNPT, where they were joined by representatives of PSA International (Port of Singapore Authority – PSA). The interaction highlighted the strategic importance of the WDFC–JNPT linkage for global trade integration and port-led development.

The Japanese delegation was led by Mr. Kawakami Masahiro, First Secretary, Embassy of Japan, and Mr. Koji Yagi, Consulate General, Embassy of Japan. The DFCCIL team was headed by Mr. H. G. Tiwari, Chief General Manager/Mumbai, and Mr. S. K. Negi, Consultant/Project Director, along with senior officers from the Mumbai Unit.

The near-completion of the Vaitarna–JNPT section marks a critical step in operationalising the full Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, a transformative infrastructure project aimed at decongesting existing rail routes and enhancing freight efficiency across the country.
