The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has launched a cargo service as part of efforts to diversify its revenue sources and reduce dependence on passenger ticket income.
The new service will allow businesses and individuals to use KSRTC’s extensive bus network for transporting parcels and other eligible goods across Kerala. The initiative is aimed at making use of available capacity within the corporation’s existing transportation network.
KSRTC’s wide reach across urban and rural areas gives the cargo service access to a large number of destinations. The network could provide an additional logistics option for small businesses, traders and other customers seeking affordable cargo transportation.
The move is part of KSRTC’s broader efforts to generate non-ticket revenue and improve the financial performance of the state-run transport corporation. Revenue from cargo operations could provide an additional income stream alongside passenger services and other commercial activities.
The service is also expected to support local businesses by offering another channel for moving goods between different parts of the state. Faster access to transport facilities could be particularly useful for small consignments and short-distance shipments.
KSRTC will be able to leverage its existing fleet, depots and operational network for the service, potentially reducing the need for major additional infrastructure investments.
The corporation is expected to assess demand and operational performance as the cargo service expands. If successful, the initiative could become an important component of KSRTC’s strategy to strengthen non-fare revenue and make better use of its transportation network.
