India’s silver imports have declined sharply following the introduction of a new import licensing regime that has disrupted shipments and delayed cargo clearances at ports. The new rules, aimed at strengthening regulatory oversight and monitoring inbound precious metal shipments, have slowed the movement of silver into the country, affecting traders, refiners and jewellery manufacturers.

Industry sources said importers are facing delays in obtaining the necessary approvals under the revised licensing framework, resulting in a temporary reduction in import volumes. Several consignments are reportedly awaiting clearance as businesses adjust to the new compliance requirements.

The disruption comes at a time when domestic demand for silver remains firm, driven by the jewellery, silverware, industrial and investment sectors. Market participants warned that prolonged delays could tighten domestic supplies and increase price volatility if normal import flows are not restored quickly.

India is one of the world’s largest consumers of silver, with the country relying heavily on imports to meet domestic demand. Any interruption in inbound shipments can have a significant impact on supply chains, particularly for manufacturers that depend on regular raw material availability.

Trade representatives have urged authorities to streamline the licensing process and expedite approvals to minimise disruptions. They believe a smoother implementation of the new system will help restore import momentum while ensuring the government’s objective of improving transparency and regulatory compliance in the precious metals trade.
