Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, visited the Namrup fertiliser complex on Sunday to review on-ground arrangements ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit on December 21. During the visit, the Prime Minister is set to lay the foundation stone for the fourth fertiliser plant at Namrup.
The new brownfield ammonia-urea complex will be established at the existing premises of Brahmaputra Valley Fertiliser Corporation Limited (BVFCL) with an investment exceeding ₹10,000 crore. Officials have described the project as a landmark initiative aimed at strengthening Assam’s industrial base and improving fertiliser availability across the Northeast and eastern India.
During the inspection, Sonowal reviewed logistical arrangements, security preparedness, and progress on preliminary works to ensure the foundation-laying ceremony proceeds smoothly. He emphasized that the project fulfills a decades-long demand of the people of Assam and reflects the Centre’s commitment to the Northeast.
“Under the visionary and decisive leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a long-standing aspiration of Assam has finally been fulfilled. The fourth fertiliser plant at Namrup reflects the Prime Minister’s deep commitment to the Northeast and his resolve to strengthen India’s agricultural and industrial self-reliance,” Sonowal said.
Once operational, the plant will have an annual production capacity of about 1.25 million metric tonnes, significantly expanding the supply of urea and related products in the Northeast, reducing dependence on distant production centres, and ensuring timely availability for farmers. It is also expected to generate substantial direct and indirect employment.
Sonowal highlighted the broader developmental initiatives in Assam and the Northeast, noting investments in connectivity, infrastructure, and industrial capacity that have created new opportunities for youth, farmers, and workers. He called for close coordination among officials to ensure a successful and seamless Prime Ministerial visit.
“The Prime Minister’s visit to Namrup on December 21 is a moment of pride for Assam. We are working with full dedication to ensure a flawless foundation-laying ceremony that reflects PM Narendra Modi’s transformational development agenda and special focus on the Northeast,” the Union Minister said.
The Namrup fertiliser project is expected to mark a new chapter in Assam’s industrial growth, strengthen fertiliser security in the region, and contribute to India’s broader goals of boosting agricultural productivity and farmers’ incomes.
