The announcement of the India–European Union Free Trade Agreement marks a significant moment for global trade, not only in terms of scale but for what it signals about the future direction of international commerce.

At a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty and shifting alliances, the agreement reflects a decisive move towards diversification, regionalisation and more resilient trade partnerships. For governments and businesses alike, the focus is increasingly on building trade systems that can adapt, reroute and recover amid disruption, rather than relying on single markets or linear supply chains.

The implications for global supply chains are substantial. As trade volumes between India and Europe expand, demand will grow not just for capacity, but for reliability, flexibility and seamless end-to-end connectivity. Traditional port-to-port logistics models alone are unlikely to absorb this growth efficiently. Instead, the ability to integrate marine services with ports, inland terminals, rail and road networks will become a key differentiator, enabling trade corridors that can perform under pressure.

Multimodal transport solutions are therefore set to play a critical role in unlocking the full potential of the agreement.

According to DP World’s Marine Services business, the India–EU trade pact reinforces a structural shift already underway in global logistics. India’s rising export momentum, combined with Europe’s push to diversify sourcing, is driving demand for logistics solutions that extend beyond mainline shipping. This includes coastal shipping, freight services, strong inland connectivity and digital visibility across the entire supply chain.

“Our focus is on enabling trade flows, not just moving cargo,” the company said, highlighting the importance of embedding marine services within integrated, multimodal networks. Such an approach can help stabilise emerging trade corridors, support faster recovery during disruptions and unlock new routes to market, while also delivering sustainability benefits through modal shift and better infrastructure utilisation.

Commenting on the development, Ganesh Raj said, “The announcement of the India–EU trade agreement reinforces a clear shift towards more regional, resilient trade flows. Capturing its full value will depend on integrated, multimodal transport solutions that extend beyond traditional port-to-port models.”

As the agreement moves towards implementation, industry-wide collaboration and coordination with governments will be essential. DP World’s Marine Services business stated it is ready to play its role in connecting markets, strengthening logistics corridors and supporting resilient, inclusive and sustainable global trade.
