The Government of India has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the country’s maritime infrastructure under the Sagarmala Programme, with 79 projects completed and 54 projects currently under implementation, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal informed the Rajya Sabha in a written reply.
The Minister said the programme continues to accelerate port-led development, improve multimodal connectivity and enhance India’s logistics efficiency.
According to the Ministry, the total capacity of India’s major ports has increased to 1,728.4 million tonnes (MT) in 2025-26, reflecting sustained investments in port infrastructure and operational efficiency.
To strengthen seamless cargo movement, 294 rail and road connectivity projects have been identified to improve last-mile connectivity between ports and the hinterland, supporting the government’s vision of an integrated multimodal logistics network.
The Ministry is also advancing several green maritime initiatives, including the One Nation One Port Process (ONOP) to standardise port operations, the HaritSagar Guidelines for environmentally sustainable port development, and the Green Tug Transition Programme aimed at promoting cleaner harbour operations.
The initiatives are aligned with the Government’s vision of building stronger ports, enhancing connectivity and creating a sustainable maritime ecosystem to support the goal of Viksit Bharat.
