Sarbananda Sonowal has reviewed the progress of the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) project and directed officials to complete Phase 1 of the development by July 2026.

During the review meeting, the Union minister assessed ongoing construction activities, infrastructure readiness, and project timelines aimed at establishing the NMHC as a major centre showcasing India’s maritime history, trade legacy, and cultural heritage.

Officials informed the minister that work on key components of the first phase is progressing steadily, including museum facilities, exhibition zones, visitor infrastructure, and waterfront development. The project is expected to become a significant tourism and educational destination linked to India’s maritime sector.

Sonowal emphasised the importance of timely execution and coordination among implementing agencies to ensure the project meets global standards. He also highlighted the government’s broader focus on strengthening maritime infrastructure, heritage preservation, and coastal tourism under India’s maritime development initiatives.

Industry observers said the NMHC project is expected to support tourism-driven economic activity while enhancing awareness of India’s historical role in global trade and seafaring traditions.

The ministry said Phase 1 completion by July 2026 remains a priority, with ongoing monitoring of construction milestones and infrastructure integration activities.
