India’s apparel exports to the United States have declined 26%, highlighting growing competitive pressure in one of the country’s most important overseas markets.

The sharp fall comes as Bangladesh strengthens its position in the US apparel market and overtakes China, reflecting a shift in sourcing patterns among American buyers.

Bangladesh’s expanding share has been supported by its large garment manufacturing base, competitive production costs and strong presence in global apparel supply chains. China, meanwhile, continues to face challenges from changing sourcing strategies and efforts by US retailers to diversify their supply chains.

For Indian exporters, the decline underscores the need to improve cost competitiveness, delivery efficiency and product capabilities. Higher production costs and competition from major garment-producing countries remain key challenges for the sector.

The US is a major destination for Indian textiles and apparel, making changes in American sourcing patterns significant for manufacturers and exporters. Industry players are seeking stronger market access and policy support to protect India’s competitiveness.

The latest shift could intensify pressure on Indian apparel exporters to expand into new markets, improve value-added production and strengthen their position in global supply chains.
