Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) has handled 50.007 million tonnes of cargo in FY 2026–27 as of October 13, achieving the significant 50-million-tonne milestone in a record 196 days.

The port handled a total of 50,007,081 tonnes of cargo, reaching the landmark 17 days earlier than in the previous financial year. The achievement highlights improvements in operational productivity, cargo-handling efficiency and the coordinated efforts of the port’s workforce.

The milestone was achieved under the leadership of VPA Chairperson Jasmeet Singh Bindra, IRTS, and Deputy Chairperson Roshni Aparanji Korati, IAS. The port authority attributed the performance to operational efficiency and the collective commitment of its employees.

Located on India’s east coast in Andhra Pradesh, Visakhapatnam Port plays a vital role in the country’s maritime trade and industrial supply chains. Its strategic position along the Bay of Bengal supports cargo movement between domestic industrial centres and international markets.

The port handles a diverse range of commodities, including iron ore, coal, petroleum products, fertilisers, steel-related cargo and other bulk and general cargo. These operations support key industrial sectors, energy requirements and export-oriented businesses across Andhra Pradesh and its wider hinterland.

Strong rail and road connectivity further enables the movement of cargo between the port, industrial clusters and inland markets, reinforcing its importance as a major logistics gateway.

Achieving the 50-million-tonne milestone 17 days earlier than in FY 2025–26 underscores the port’s continued focus on enhancing cargo-handling performance and operational productivity.

Improved cargo movement and vessel turnaround can help reduce delays for shipping lines and cargo owners while enabling more efficient utilisation of port infrastructure. Sustaining this momentum will depend on effective operational coordination, equipment utilisation, hinterland connectivity and the efficient handling of diverse cargo segments.

The early achievement of the milestone positions Visakhapatnam Port on a strong footing as it continues to support India’s growing maritime trade and logistics requirements in the current financial year.
