Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal held discussions in Kolkata on a comprehensive strategy to strengthen West Bengal’s maritime ecosystem and position the state as Eastern India’s leading maritime hub.

The talks focused on expanding port-led development, enhancing logistics infrastructure, and improving maritime connectivity to support trade and industrial growth across the region.

As part of the proposed roadmap, maritime projects worth approximately ₹19,209 crore are planned for implementation by 2031. The investments are expected to generate more than 62,500 direct and indirect jobs while reinforcing West Bengal’s role as a critical gateway for shipping, trade, and logistics in eastern India.

The planned initiatives include the development of port infrastructure, modernization of logistics networks, and measures aimed at improving cargo movement and regional connectivity. Officials believe the projects will help attract investments, boost economic activity, and strengthen supply chain efficiency.

The proposed development aligns with the Centre’s broader vision of expanding India’s maritime capabilities through enhanced port infrastructure, coastal development, and multimodal connectivity, with West Bengal expected to play a pivotal role in driving growth along the eastern seaboard.
